Ladybug Pots

by Joani MacCubbin

With this craft you get many different pot decorating ideas using just a pencil eraser. When you get going you will probably start inventing your own designs!

You can create flowers, ladybugs, caterpillars and even balloons. It's easy and lots of fun!

Materials Needed:
• Acrylic paints in your favorite colors. please include two shades of green, white, red and yellow
• 3 new pencil erasers
• 1 single edge razor blade
• 2 (or many more) 4" or 5" pots
• Small artists brush
• Extra fine point sharpie marker
• Paper Towels
• Small water container for cleaning your brushes
• Plastic picnic plate
• A few pieces of paper for practice painting
Optional:
• Clear acrylic spray -- spray lightly to the finished pot.
• Kitchen sponge -- cut in small squares.

Dampen one of the small squares in water and squeeze out excess water. Lightly dip the sponge in paint and press onto pot, leave an empty spot, and continue around the rim creating a checkerboard design. Using the other end of the sponge, dip into your second color and fill in the blank spots.

Begin by gathering all your materials together.

Put small puddles of paint of your chosen colors in a plastic picnic plate. Take one of your pencil erasers and slice it in half lengthwise and carefully break off one side. So you end up with half an eraser on the end of your pencil. This shape will give you a half circle and give you a 'leaf' print for your future flower.

Before applying the paint to the pot, I suggest using a piece of scrap paper to practice on.

For the ladybug:
Dip your round eraser in the red paint and dab circles all around your pot. (Don't forget to practice first) Wait about a half hour until your red circles are thoroughly dry.

Now this ladybug will 'happen' right before your eyes. Using the fine pointed Sharpie, add a slightly curved line through the center of the red painted circle. Add two dots or little hearts on each side of this line, add a small sideways 'c' as a head and fill in with black. Draw two antenna -- .either two squiggly lines or a line with a dot at the end, your choice!

Finally we'll give the little guy some feet. Three lines on each side will complete your little ladybug.

Now if you have a wild imagination, make some different color ladybugs. Pink ones, green ones and yellow ones. Or, even some gold, silver and copper ones. Bottles of paint available at your favorite craft store is your only limitation.
